Veenstra Technology gate valves
Knife gate valves are often installed beneath silos, funnels, hoppers, chutes or conveyors. A flat gate that moves horizontally is used to either completely shut off the product flow or partially open it to regulate the flow rate. This makes slide valves highly versatile, serving as both shut-off fittings and metering devices in gravity-fed pipelines. They are often used as maintenance valves and are fitted with felt to prevent leaks and wastage. Furthermore, slide valves ensure that parts of the system can be safely shut off whilst maintenance is being carried out on other equipment.
A typical application for a gate valve
A slide gate is often used as a silo outlet valve to control the metering or shutoff of product flows. It is frequently installed above a conveying system, such as a conveyor belt, screw conveyor or rotary valve. Slide valves are also used above loading systems, such as loading chutes, to start and stop the feed to lorries or ships in a controlled manner. Manually operated slide valves beneath silos often serve as maintenance valves: they shut off the flow so that underlying equipment, such as conveyors or dosing units, can be maintained safely.
Key benefits and features of a knife gate valve
- A steel or stainless steel frame ensures robust, dust-tight and reliable seals that prevent the leakage of powders and dust.
- When open, the sliding panel creates a full flow which ensures a quick operation. Furthermore, the slide gate can be operated without any problems whilst material is flowing out of the silo, which is ideal for last minute closure or settlement.
- A gate valve is available in durable and hard-wearing designs for abrasive materials such as sand, gravel or cement. The well-thought-out design, with few moving parts, reduces wear and extends service life, thereby minimising downtime.
- The slide gate valve can be driven in a variety of ways, as it is available with pneumatic, electric or manual actuation, depending on the application. Actuators are interchangeable and can be fitted with limit switches or positioners for control; a handwheel may also be fitted if required.
- Thanks to the sliding gate valve’s low installation profile, the installation height is kept to a minimum. This makes it compact and easy to integrate between existing transport systems. Installation is possible horizontally, at an angle or vertically, depending on the process configuration.
Our butterfly valves are characterised by a long, maintenance-free service life. A one-off installation ensures a long service life and, if necessary, simple maintenance without having to remove the valve from the pipeline. Thanks to our bespoke solutions, we can integrate any gate valve seamlessly into your existing system: from food-grade stainless steel versions to ATEX-certified models for potentially explosive atmospheres.
