Cutting a keyway
Do you require components in which precise keyways need to be machined? Using keyway cutting, we produce grooves that precisely match the dimensions and tolerances of your product. This specialised form of metalworking ensures that the material is not subjected to unnecessary stress during the machining process. This guarantees you a secure and reliable connection within your application.
How does keyway cutting work?
Cutting a keyway is a machining technique, which means that small pieces of metal are shaved off the workpiece. This shaving is carried out by a keyway cutter. Unlike CNC milling cutters, whereas milling involves machining complete shapes or surfaces, keyway cutting focuses specifically on the precise creation of a groove. This process is repeated until the correct keyway has been created. This method of metalworking is exceptionally precise within the pre-agreed keyway tolerances, and we can create keyways of various sizes, ranging from very wide to narrow keyways.
Cutting a keyway for your industry
Keyway cutting is used in industries where precise drive systems are essential. The fit between the shaft and the hub must be exact to prevent wear and play. Some sectors in which keyway cutting plays an important role are:
- Mechanical engineering: vshafts and hubs that need to transmit power reliably within installations;
- Drive Technology: for components where dimensions and fit have a direct impact on performance;
- Heavy industry: for robust connections capable of withstanding heavy loads;
- Servicing and maintenance: for repairing or reapplying keyways in existing components.
